BENZOIN Styrax tonkinensis, Thailand, Absolute. Comforting and reassuring Benzoin is a powerhouse for revival repairing skin at a deep dermal level. Proven to significantly increase levels of two of the skins protein’s: Collagen and elastin, in the dermal fibroblasts, Benzoin helps improve overall elasticity and firmness, reducing surface fine lines and managing scar tissue formation.

ROSE GERANIUM Pelargonium graveolens var. roseum, South Africa, Essential Oil. Sweet and uplifting Rose geranium acts as a conditioning astringent to skin, tightening and decreasing surface crêpyness. Inflammatory moderators bring relief to the fragile and inflamed skin as Rose geranium helps to stabilise surface microbiome (flora) improving texture and allowing skin to better protect itself.

PERSIAN SAFFRON Crocus sativus, Iran, Whole. Reduces discolouration and significantly improves overall skin condition. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties have a profound effect on the skin scavenging free radicals, promoting oxygen diffusion through tissues and helping to protect skin against harmful UV-induced peroxidation and skin photoaging.

SPIKENARD Nardostachys jatamansi, Nepal, Essential Oil. Complex, warm and earthy Spikenard has a mellifluous, mellow, sweet and woody scent. Easing inflammation, this richly layered essence reduces redness and irritation with its antibacterial, antifungal and long-recognised ability to settle inflammation and consequently inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

Subtle, fruity apricot and lightly spiced soothing, protective Persian Saffron with heady, transformative Himalayan Spikenard sit lightly on the skin and melt into sweet beds of layered Rose before sinking into comforting, firming and regenerating depths of Benzoin, delicious Vanilla and Tonka bean with hidden hints of buttery chocolate and a delicate, sun-baked light wood dry down.

FACE Massage a generous pea sized amount of balm into the face, repeat on the neck and chest; ideally over FH01 Face Oil. Soften balm in the warmth of your fingers before applying with gentle pressure to skin. Massage well, circling down into deeper layers of tissue. Tender spots can represent areas of fascial, fat and muscle tissue rigidity so if you come across tender spots spend a little longer massaging here, pressing and touching until tensions ease creating space in the tissue.

FUME Face Balms can also be used as an intensive skin treatment. Either apply a thicker layer alone over clean skin or mix ½ tsp of FH01 Face Balm with 1 tsp of raw honey from happy bees. Mix honey and balm together into a smooth paste and spread over damp skin for a more hydrating effect or dry skin for a more nourishing one. Leave on for 5 - 20 mins. Rinse thoroughly with freshly clean hot compress.

Fiona prefers a thick cotton flannel as this retains the heat better and for longer compared to thin muslin. However, it’s always personal preference so use whichever natural material cloth you prefer but sure to use a clean one every, single time and take care to have the flannel hot enough to warm and soothe skin but not too hot so as to be uncomfortable. Once rinsed thoroughly hold hot compress on each area of chest, neck and face to gently invigorate - being sure to include the lateral neck (both sides of neck), the very back of the neck and over the heart. Repeat x3 times. The warmth of the compress is gently stimulating and leaves skin temperate which helps absorption of products, hydration of skin and healthy skin biome. Ideally follow immediately by applying FH01 Face Oil and the usual amount FH01 Face Balm whilst skin is still damp.

BODY Apply to any areas of the body that would benefit from extra support, such as dry patches of skin and areas prone to being parched, like cuticles and elbows. Also, sweep over pulse points. Inhale fragrance. Daydream. Close your eyes. Drift. Allow the scent to momentarily transport you to your own distant lands within. After all pulse points are simply precise points of entry to our inner constellations where blood rises to the surface and the scent is warmed by it, diffusing slowly both into the air (outwards) and into us (inwards). On the body Fiona suggests the inside of the elbow as well as the inner wrist; behind the top of the ear and behind the knee where you feel the rhythm of your heart and because FUME artisan aromatics are natural and subtle you can place anywhere you want to be intimately scented.

Fiona says “Spend some time massaging the balm into your neck and chest. The sides and the back of the neck and either side of our sternum (breast bone) are often areas we carry fascial tightness, massage well here. We can often forget these areas somehow thinking of our face as disconnected from the rest of our body. Massage down into deeper tissues layers across the chest, working from the centre of the sternum (breastbone) outwards to the shoulder on each side – don’t forget between the breasts as this is one of the first places skin can crinkle. Spend time working directly into any sore spots you may find as your massage. Rounded and weighted shoulders can create tensions in both the back and the front of the neck, and chest pulling the face down. Other factors, such as can a larger chest can also exacerbate this ‘pulling down’: Releasing tensions beneath the surface in these areas creates a lightness and lift to the face. This is a beautiful balm to facilitate buoyancy and lift to skin and soul in multiple ways.”
